Greenways dedicationsA pair of Greenways dedications recently took place, as (above, left) Mayor Stephen Goldsmith spoke at the opening of Central Waterfront Park. The August 20 ceremony marked completion of the first phase of a plan to build parks and walkways on both sides of White River from Washington Street to 10th Street. The old Washington Street Bridge, now a pedestrian promenade, dominates the background in the photo at left, with the city's skyline a bit farther in the distance. A crowd gathered in the rest area between White River Gardens and the waterway to hear Goldsmith, Congresswoman Julia Carson, retired Congressman John Myers, and Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. Ceremonies also marked the opening of the new Fall Creek Bridge connecting the IUPUI campus and the lower reaches of White River Trail with the upper trail section. The bridge is named for Dr. Beurt SerVaas, president of the City-County Council, shown at left (in red hat) making the first official crossing. Click here to return to the Indy Greenways News page! |
