Awards recognition (October 30, 2000)
Dedicated Greenways workers and supporters honored.

Safe walk to school (October 4, 2000)
School children from IPS 15 and 31 walked Pleasant Run Trail during Walk to School 2000 to promote health and safety using the Greenways.

Fall Creek Trail project (August 1, 2000)
Construction bids went out for the Fall Creek Trail project from the Monon to Keystone Avenue.

Canal bridges project complete (Summer 2000)
Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson officially opened the restored bowstring bridge at The Indianapolis Museum of Art July 12. The new pedestrian bridge in Broad Ripple opened July 1 and the restored bedstead bridge at Illinois Street opened in late summer. All three bridges are part of the Central Canal Towpath.

South Monon funded (July 6, 2000)
Indy Greenways received $1 million to build Phases 4 and 5 of the Monon Rail-Trail! The ISTEA grant money was awarded to begin and complete this section, often called the South Monon, which will extend the trail from Fall Creek to 10th Street. Tell us how you will use the South Monon.

Summer EMT patrol (Summer 2000)
Every Saturday and Sunday this past summer, Clarian Health EMTs bicycled the Monon Rail-Trail from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist users in need of medical attention.

Plantings: (Spring 2000)
During April, volunteers from Northminster Presbyterian Church planted shrubs and bushes along the Monon near Kessler Boulevard. Other volunteers at our Pleasant Run Trail cleanup planted 60 trees that were donated by Indianapolis Power and Light.

Pogues Run Trail: (Spring 2000)
Major flood control and water quality improvement projects have been started at Brookside Park and at Emerson Avenue. Part of this $12 million project will go to create recreational features, including trails and wetlands. There is more information at the IndyGov site.

Pleasant Run Trail: (Spring 2000)
Dead trees have been cleared along the trail in Garfield park and an artist has carved the stumps into various birds.

Northwest trails: (Spring 2000)
Indy Greenways has begun a feasibility study of the Pike Township Connectivity Plan, a path along 71st Street linking business developments at I-465 with Eagle Creek Park.

Greenways Amenities: (Spring 2000)
150 benches have been donated to Indy Parks by the Indianapolis Zoo, 50 of which will be placed on greenways. Partnerships will be developed to install the benches at various locations as neighborhood, special interest and memorial projects. Persons or groups who wish to sponsor a bench for a $750 donation may call Indy Greenways at (317) 327-7431

Penn Central Corridor Development: (Spring 2000)
Indy Parks Greenways and Dept. of Metropolitan Development have formed a partnership to study the feasibility of future trail development within the Penn Central Rail Corridor. Surface Transportation Funds have been ear-marked for this project. A tunnel under I-465 has been completed and the feasibility of a trail connecting to the tunnel will be researched first.

Little Buck Creek Greenway: (Spring 2000)
Discussions have been made with C.P. Morgan, residential developer, to install a trail along the Little Buck Creek Greenway as part of new housing developments. C.P. Morgan has offered to cut the trail and lay base material if Indy Parks can contribute funds to pave the trail in the future and make further connections throughout the local community.

Phonin' on the Monon: (Spring 2000)
New red pay phones have been installed along the Monon Trail, as a pilot project. Use them to make local calls, or phone Indy Greenways at 327-7431 with your best idea for making our trails better!
