Hoosier hospitality, Indy Greenways style

Dear Editor (of The Indianapolis Star),

I was interested to read Mr. Queisser's September 14, 1999, letter critical of Indy Greenways. It is my job with the National Park Service to be familiar with greenway systems all over the country, and my specific assignment to work with greenway projects throughout Indiana. This professional experience leads me to exactly the opposite conclusion from Mr. Queisser's opinion that the trail is "good for the criminals who use it."

I had an experience on September 16th that reinforced this point for me in a very personal way. While bicycling on the White River Greenway with the vice chairman of the Indianapolis Greenways Commission inspecting new features since my last visit, my wallet fell out of my backpack when I reached for a spare role of film for my camera. Of course I was embarrassed and frustrated with my mistake when I discovered it later, but I assumed that my money and credit cards were history.

Just before returning to my Cleveland-area office the next day I decided to check with the Indianapolis Police Department to see if they could be of any help to me. Not only had an Indy Greenways user turned in my wallet to the police, but all of the money and credit cards were intact! Lucky, yes, but my luck was influenced by losing my wallet along the greenway. If this is the "criminal" behavior Mr. Queisser sees from Indianapolis Greenways users, please send these people to Ohio.

I would like to sincerely thank the greenways users of Indianapolis for proving once again that those who use these facilities are good and honest people. You have left a very positive impression with an out of town visitor.
