South Monon Trail progress

Update, July 16, 2002: The South Monon project is now fully funded, designed and approved by the State Department of Transportation (INDOT). Because this project is mostly funded by Transportation Enhancement Grants, INDOT is in charge of hiring the contractor for the project. A bid-letting event to hire a contractor was held in May and all the bids came back too high, as to the State's requirements. The project was rebid by the state on June 11. Yardberry was the low bidder and they were awarded the contract by INDOT. We have sent out required 20% payment to INDOT and have a pre-construction meeting set. At that point, we will know when construction will begin and when it is expected to end. We are still confident that we will be constructing this summer and into fall. While there still may be a few items to wrap up in the spring, such as landscaping, the trail should be usable this fall.

Update, June 1, 2002: We will be extending the Monon south to 10th Street downtown this summer. This construction should be completed by fall 2002. We are also working with local businesses in the 10th Street/Mass Ave area to get some connections to that area, and possibly even east over to Pogues Run.

Indianapolis, July 6, 2000: Indy Greenways received $1 million to build Phases 4 and 5 of the Monon Rail-Trail! The ISTEA grant money was awarded to begin and complete this section, often called the South Monon, which will extend the trail from Fall Creek to 10th Street.

As shown in the photos, the South Monon begins at the Monon Bridge over Fall Creek, where there will be a trailhead linking the Monon Trail to the Fall Creek Trail by Fall 2002. The Monon Trail will then continue south across Sutherland Avenue and 25th Street to a future trailhead connection at the Old Northside Soccer Fields at 16th Street, often with views of the downtown skyline. This extension will bring the total length of the Monon Rail-Trail to about 10 miles.
