White River State Park expansionRenovation of the west bank of White River -- from a deteriorating concrete slab into a green urban park -- is expected to begin by May, said The Indianapolis Star in a story on February 15. The west riverbank will be transformed into a grassy slope with a walkway on top, from the Indianapolis Zoo to 10th Street between the river and White River Parkway, West Drive. The work should be completed by the summer of 2001. Plans call for demolition of the existing concrete embankment, creation of a sloping bank, placement of stone in White River to serve as the toe of the new slope, grass seeding of the bank, installation of a 12 foot wide pedestrian walk along the top, and addition of shade trees and park benches. This project will be integrated with the work done last summer south of the zoo and on the east bank. When completed, new lighting, benches, overlooks, landscaping and paths will line both sides of the river, [and] connect to the Indy Greenway system.
