CIBA Trash and Trek

On September 16, 27 people came to clean the Central Indiana Bicycling Association adopted one-mile section of the White River Wapahani Trail. In the photos at left, young and not so young volunteers enjoyed the day and the company as they gathered litter from the trail along White River Parkway, West Drive, between 30th and 38th Streets.

"The day was chilly at 9 a.m. but the sun was out and it turned out to be a beautiful day," said Trash and Trek organizer Diana Virgil. "We found the most trash under the bridges. It is strange why people throw junk under bridges. Most interesting find was aluminum drainpipe. There was little trash on the rest of the trail."

"We got several 'Thank yous' from passing trail users," she added.

The Trek came after the cleanup and was an informative cycling tour of Marian College and the downtown area. From the parking lot of Just Winging It (formerly The Marina Restaurant), the group rode north to the Velodrome where Joe Szentivanyi talked about the new Skate Park as the kids on the trip enjoyed the humps and dips.

Then Szentivanyi and Richard Vonnegut collaborated on narrating a tour of Marian College before the group rode downtown on the White River Trail, crossing Fall Creek on the Servaas suspension bridge (below), and crossing White River on the Promenade from the Zoo to downtown, "where the smell of the Chili Cook-off made our tummies growl," said Virgil.

The Trek concluded with a visit to the CanalWalk where Vonnegut talked about the Congressional Medal of Honor and the USS Indianapolis memorials. Volunteers agreed it was a day well worth doing again.
