Grantmaking

Grantmaking is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Hoosiers who choose the Greenways Foundation specialty license plate. Each year, the Foundation is able to awards tens of thousands of dollars in grants for the development, improvement, maintenance, accessibility, and sustainability of trails in Indiana thanks to these generous supporters.

The Hoosier Trails Grant Fund offers two types of grants:

  • Existing 501(c)(3) organizations, local governments, and Indiana universities and research institutions are eligible to apply for a Project Grant (up to $10,000) for a trail-related project.

  • Grassroots organizations may apply for a Catalyst Grant (up to $1,000) to cover legal and IRS application fees associated with forming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

  • Greenways Foundation is eager to support projects that advance the trail network and engage communities across Indiana. Priority will be given to projects that:

    • Promote accessibility and community collaboration – initiatives that ensure trails are welcoming and usable for all and foster strong partnerships among local organizations, volunteers, and residents.

    • Complete trail connections – projects that fill gaps and strengthen the continuity of Indiana’s trail networks.

    • Align with the Visionary Trails Plan – initiatives that support the long-term goals of statewide trail development and enhancement.

    • Focus on advocacy and education – projects that raise awareness, educate the public, and encourage state and local investment in trails.

Projects that clearly demonstrate one or more of these priorities are most likely to advance the Foundation’s mission and create lasting impact for Indiana communities.
