Become a Trail Champion: Be the Boots on the Ground for Indiana’s Trails

Trails do not advocate for themselves. They rely on people who care enough to show up, speak up, and pitch in.

That is why we created Trail Champions.

Our mission is simple: to be the boots on the ground for trails.

Trail Champions are everyday Hoosiers who believe trails strengthen communities. They help us protect, promote, and steward the places that connect neighborhoods, support local businesses, and improve our health and quality of life.

If you love your local trail, this is your invitation to step into leadership.

Sign up today and help us protect and promote Indiana’s trails for generations to come.

What Does a Trail Champion Do?

Trail Champions support trails in two powerful ways:

Promote the Plate

When Hoosiers choose the Greenways Foundation specialty license plate, they make it possible for us to grant tens of thousands of dollars to Indiana trail organizations every year while serving as the state’s leading advocate for trails.

Trail Champions help spread the word. That might mean:

  • Sharing information with friends and family

  • Posting on social media

  • Distributing flyers on local trails

  • Telling neighbors why they chose the plate

Simple conversations lead to real funding for trails across Indiana.

Steward the Trails

Trail Champions also care for the trails in their own communities and when they travel.

You can:

  • Audit your local trail for maintenance and safety concerns

  • Report issues that need attention

  • Pick up litter

  • Remove invasive species such as winter creeper, garlic mustard, and honeysuckle

The beauty of this role is flexibility. You can audit your trail at any time. Go for a walk, bring a trash bag, take notes, and help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Volunteer Opportunities: Get Involved Now

There are immediate ways to plug in.

15th Annual Trails Celebration Charity Luncheon - April 10 from 11 AM - 2 PM

Our biggest event of the year is just around the corner, and we need Trail Champions to help make it a success. Volunteers support event setup, guest check-in, and overall hospitality. It is a powerful way to meet fellow advocates and see firsthand how trails bring people together.

This luncheon fuels our advocacy work and grants program. Your time helps amplify our impact.

Audit Your Trail Anytime

You do not need to wait for a scheduled workday to make a difference. Choose your local trail. Walk it. Observe it. Care for it. Report what you see.

Small actions, taken consistently, create lasting change.

Sign up today and help us protect and promote Indiana’s trails for generations to come.

Our 2030 Goals

We have bold goals for the future:

  • Grow the Trail Champion program to 250 members

  • Increase license plate holders by 50 percent

  • Pick up 1,000 bags of trash

  • Remove 1,000 invasive plants

We can only reach these goals with committed individuals who believe trails are essential infrastructure for Indiana communities.

Why It Matters

Trails drive economic development.
They improve public health.
They offer alternative transportation.
They connect us to nature and to each other.

But none of that happens without people who care enough to lead.

Be the boots on the ground.
Be the advocate in your community.
Be a Trail Champion.

Sign up today and help us protect and promote Indiana’s trails for generations to come.
